Crane and Rigging Exam Study for Healy Workers
Healy is a coal town first and a park town second. Usibelli Coal Mine has dug here since 1943, Golden Valley Electric burns that coal a few miles away, and the Parks Highway carries summer traffic past town to the Denali National Park entrance. Each of those operations answers to a different safety agency, which matters when you are deciding which certification to chase. Our self-paced course lets you study for accredited crane, rigger and signal exams on a phone or laptop between shifts, without leaving the Nenana River valley until test day.

Three regulators inside one valley
Work at the Usibelli pits is overseen by the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration, so the OSHA crane standard in Subpart CC is not the rule that applies there. Plenty of mining employers and their contractors still prefer an operator who holds a nationally accredited card, because it gives them an objective record of what the person was tested on.
Construction and maintenance outside the mine fence, including most private jobs around town, falls to AKOSH, which adopts the federal crane and derrick rules by reference. Inside Denali National Park the picture changes again: federal OSHA generally keeps jurisdiction over operations within the park boundary. If you move between all three, an accredited certification is the one credential that travels with you.
Mine, plant and the lifts they generate
Usibelli moved all of its digging to the Two Bull Ridge pit in 2003, walking its dragline over from the old Poker Flats area in about five days. A 2025 presentation to the Legislature listed roughly 105 full-time, year-round jobs at the mine, all held by Alaskans. Large equipment rebuilds, component swaps and material handling keep riggers and operators busy even in a small workforce.
Golden Valley's Healy plant has two coal units. The utility installed a selective catalytic reduction system on the older Unit 1 and, in early 2024, reversed an earlier plan to retire Unit 2 by the end of that year, choosing to keep it running until cheaper reliable power is available. Retrofit work of that kind means heavy picks of ductwork and pollution-control components inside a cramped plant footprint.
What the Pretty Rocks job showed
A permafrost-driven landslide at Pretty Rocks cut the Denali Park Road in 2021. The National Park Service answered with a 475-foot steel truss bridge across the slide, part of a roughly $230 million effort that also set thermosyphons to keep the ground frozen. The bridge was completed in 2026, with bus service beyond it expected to resume in 2027.
Setting long truss sections over moving ground in a short subarctic season is exactly the kind of work that rewards an operator who can read a load chart quickly and a rigger who understands sling angles. It also shows why Healy crews should expect federal rules on park projects.
Planning the trip to test
Fairbanks is the closer metro for most Healy residents, and Anchorage is a longer drive south on the Parks. Written exams are offered through online proctoring, test centers and scheduled events, while the practical portion always means running a real machine in front of an examiner. Check the certifying body's calendar early, since summer is short and busy for everyone here.
Questions people ask
Does a coal mine job require NCCCO certification?
MSHA rules govern the mine, not OSHA Subpart CC, so it depends on the employer. Many mines and contractors ask for accredited certification anyway as a hiring or site-access standard, so ask the hiring company what it expects.
I only work summers at the park. Is the course still worth it?
The course is self-paced, so you can study over the winter and be ready for a written exam before the season opens. Your progress stays saved between sessions.
Is there a state crane license I need for Alaska?
No. Alaska relies on the federal certification and employer evaluation rules instead. Our requirements guide covers what employers must document.
My operator card was issued years ago. When should I start recertification prep?
Accredited operator certifications run five years. Start reviewing several months before the expiry date so you can book the written recertification exam on time, and keep a log of your seat hours, since documented crane experience can waive the practical retest. See recertification prep.
Can our mine contractor enroll a whole crew?
Yes. Employers can sign up several workers at once. Send the details through the enrollment form and an advisor will reply.
